As probiotics were making their way into the mainstream, Barrel Creek Provisions needed a design that would make them stand out from the crowd. The design needed to reflect the wholesome and power-packed nature of their products. Pencil Worx and Sam Ayling took on this challenge and created a name that evokes the cold, fresh water of Austin’s Greenbelt springs, paying homage to the age-old barrel picking process.
The design features classic botanical illustrations to highlight the natural, earthy ingredients. The packaging’s compositional simplicity ensures maximum shelf impact. The design was created using Adobe Illustrator and digitally printed to keep costs to a minimum. The label artwork was then laminated to protect the product during shipping and refrigeration.
The product comes in three sizes, each with its own unique label dimensions. The consumer can select a soft pack travel size pouch, a traditional glass 16 or 32 FL OZ jar, or the fermented brine juice which is also a glass bottle. The glass packaging not only helps keep the vegetables fresh but also maintains a level of authenticity. The strong, bold logotype gives the product more visibility and shelf impact.
The project started in April 2017 in New York and finished in January 2018. Extensive product research was conducted within the fermented sector to understand the competitive set. The team also researched the client's existing packaging design to identify how they could improve the overall design and shelf impact. One of the challenges faced was ensuring that all the ingredients were measured correctly for FDA approval.
Barrel Creek Provisions underwent a brand transformation to establish itself as a formidable player in the fermented foods category. The packaging uses a simple graphic frame structure to emphasize key facts, giving it a compositional simplicity to ensure maximum shelf impact. Classic botanical illustrations were used to reinforce the natural earthy ingredients and offset the bold modern typographical style.
